Piper's Paraphrases takes a lighthearted but educational approach to literature and all things English! Our goals are to help students study and to create classroom resources for educators. Enjoy!
About Us
Emily is an English and Musical Theater teacher as well as a director and writer. You may know her as Professor Pipes from her YouTube channel, where she discusses plays, novels, poems, lessons, and anything English literature.
Scott is Emily’s husband, Cooper’s dog dad, and the owner of Robots of Doom production and videography company. He is also the director, producer, and editor of Piper’s Paraphrases.
Our Story
“Closed for two weeks” became “closed until further notice” just as Emily was introducing Romeo and Juliet to ninth graders in March of 2020. Suddenly she was facing the seeming impossibility of teaching Shakespeare through a computer screen to students who couldn’t regularly attend lessons. After a recommendation from her videographer husband, Emily decided to adjust her perspective and use this difficult situation as an opportunity, and she and Scott started making YouTube videos to teach her students each act of the play, incorporating a passion for the literature and a bit of humor in order to bring a little positivity — and a lot of information — to students who were feeling scared and isolated.
This was the birth of Piper’s Paraphrases. While our original goal was to help her kids during a hard time, we soon discovered that the videos were a vital creative outlet for us. They helped us just as much as Emily’s students. With that in mind, we realized that we could help other struggling teachers and their kids. Our goal shifted. We expanded the channel to help both overwhelmed students and overworked educators as we all continued to navigate unprecedented circumstances. Thankfully, we believe we’ve been able to do just that.
